Jessica Cooper exhibition at the Edgar Modern

Jessica Cooper – Just Turn Left, Edgar Modern Bartlett Street, Saturday 01 November 2014 – Saturday 15 November 2014

Edgar Modern’s next major solo show will feature paintings from the leading contemporary painter Jessica Cooper. The show, entitled Just Turn Left, will include exclusively new work that has been created in response to a journey the artist made through France to Brittany. The show will be structured around her two major concerns; the landscape and the domestic, supported by her private sketchbooks whose presence give an insight into her working practise.

The confidence and control that underlies Cooper’s practice creates a feeling of calm and quiet beauty that runs through her oeuvre. Underlying the apparent minimalism of her finished paintings are layers of research and the precise development of striking lines. Often coat upon coat of white paint is built to her exact specification, leaving other areas of the canvas blank, a delicate process which requires careful consideration by perceptive viewers. Ever growing as an artist, this particular trip to Brittany has sparked off the beginnings of a special new body of work that will be coming exclusively to Edgar Modern later this year.

Jessica Cooper was born in 1969. She began her studies at Falmouth School of Art and went on to receive her degree from Goldsmiths College London in 1989. Her work has been compared to the Japanese Haiku; much substance and meaning is communicated with a few well-considered lines. As one critic said, her work possesses “an authority and maturity of line filled with promise”. The title of each piece is as carefully chosen as the composition, and Jessica’s audiences are often delighted by her quirky sense of humour. Jessica is a member of the Royal West of England Academy, the Newlyn Society of Artists, and an associate member of the Penwith Society of Arts. She has exhibited widely across Cornwall and the rest of the UK and has recently been invited to show her work at Tate St Ives.

This is an unmissable exhibition at a key moment in the career of a significant British painter. Jessica Coopers Just Turn Left is sure to be an exceptional collection, which Edgar Modern is excited to present.
